Stop charging more for buying more
Posting several Gift Cards costs more than posting one, so it usually makes sense for the delivery charge to increase with the number of cards in the basket. When most guests are buying just one or two, that works perfectly well.
But Christmas baskets look a little different. Guests are more likely to buy several Gift Cards at once, and a delivery charge that keeps climbing with every card could be enough to put them off at the final step.
For the busiest gifting weeks, it may be worth switching to one flat delivery rate and absorbing the extra postage cost yourself. You’ll take a little less on delivery, but you’ll remove a potential barrier to those bigger, more valuable orders.
In this second lesson of our winter postage series, we’ll show you how to make the switch in just a few minutes.
Ladder versus flat rate
The difference is easiest to see side by side.
Before, on a ladder, the charge climbs with each card added:
- One card: £3.25
- Three cards: £8.25
- Six cards: £13.25
- Ten cards: £18.25
After, on a flat rate, every basket pays the same: £3.95, whether it holds one card or ten. The exact cost will depend on the physical products in the order, but the principle remains the same.
The guest hit hardest by the ladder is the one buying several cards at once, for friends, family or a long list of colleagues. That is a high-value order, and a delivery charge that keeps climbing is exactly what makes them pause, trim the basket or leave it altogether at the last step.
Toggle's postage guide calls the alternative the Flat-Rate Anchor: a single, low delivery charge that stays the same however many cards are in the basket. It takes the postage shock out of checkout, so a guest can add a sixth card without watching the delivery price jump again.
You set the rate
With a flat rate, the number is yours to choose. Set it to cover your gifting fees on every order, whatever the basket holds, then sense-check it against your lowest card value and find a figure that works for your business.
Remember that every physical card sold is worth far more than its postage. Once it is handed over, it’s spent in your venue, and guests routinely spend above the balance loaded on it. A multi-card order multiplies that: several cards, several guests through the door, each often spending more than the card holds. That is future footfall, incremental spend and, often, a new guest at the table.
Note: Switching to a flat rate only changes what your guest pays. Toggle will continue to charge your account the standard postage rate for each order, with your Postage Settings showing the amount charged to you, the amount paid by the guest and any difference covered by your business. You can change the guest rate again whenever you need to.
Make the change
Here is the full edit, start to finish.
- Log in to Toggle and go to Settings, then Postage Settings.
- Find the product category you sell, Gift Cards, On Demand Cards or Greetings Gift Cards, expand it, and click the edit icon on the option whose price climbs as cards are added.
- Set Follow Toggle base rate? to No. This lets you set your own charges instead of the default rates.
- Under Charges to your guests, enter the same flat amount for every quantity, from one card up to ten, so the price stops climbing as the basket grows.
- Set Postage option live? to Yes, then Save. Place a test order as a guest, add several cards, and check the delivery charge stays the same the whole way.
Change one thing at a time
Make just this one change this month, and leave the rest of your Postage Settings as they are. Change several settings at once and you won't be able to tell which one moved your numbers. Hold everything else steady, and any lift in your baskets points straight back to the flat rate.
That is a change well worth making this season. Make it, watch your baskets, and we will build from there. Want it walked through click by click? Check out our Master your postage strategy for physical gifting support guide.
